Choosing what to wear for your family photos can feel like the hardest part of the whole experience, but it really doesn’t need to be complicated. Don’t over think it, try and choose outfits that feel like you, while working together beautifully in a natural, timeless way.

Neutral tones are always a strong choice for family photography because they allow the connection between you to stand out, rather than the clothes. Soft colours like creams, whites, beige, taupe, muted greys, and earthy tones all work beautifully both outdoors and at my Horsforth studio.
Another great approach is a tonal palette. This is where everyone’s outfits sit within the same colour pallet. For example; one person might wear a soft cream, another a warm beige, and another a muted brown or sage green. The result feels natural, cohesive, and visually calming.

Texture can add depth and interest to your photos without overpowering them. Knitted jumpers, linen dresses, cotton shirts, and soft layers all photograph really well and help bring subtle detail into the images.
Try to avoid heavily patterned clothing, bold logos, or slogan t-shirts as these can quickly distract from the connection in the photo and take away from the timeless-ness of your images. The same goes for overly bright colours, which can feel distracting and date the images more quickly.

Most importantly, choose outfits that you feel comfortable in. Family sessions are about movement, cuddles, laughter, and real connection. When everyone feels relaxed in what they’re wearing, it naturally shows in the photographs.
The best family images are never about perfect outfits. They’re about how it felt to be together in that moment.
